The Personal Essay
For this assignment, you will select an event from your life or make a stunning observation about something and compose an essay that reflects upon your experience. To help you get started, here are some prompts you may use to brainstorm for ideas:
- What is one thing you wish you could say to someone that you are too afraid to say?
- What is one thing that has caused you a great deal of guilt or remorse that you’ve never admitted?
- What is a secret that you have held onto that no one else knows?
- What makes you most happy? Sad? Angry?
- What significant events in your past were turning points that you would like to understand?
- What is a belief you hold that has shaped who you are?
- What is a significant object, place, or person to you and why?
- What is the thing you are proudest of? Most ashamed?
As with all previous essays, please do not attempt to answer all of these questions in your writing; instead, use them as a means to find something about yourself that piques your interest and begs to be discovered. Remember, this essay will be most successful if you begin with a significant event, subject, thought, feeling, or belief and then use your writing to analyze and observe its importance.
In your journal, please select one invention strategy and complete it to help you get started.
This essay should be 3-5 pages long in Times New Roman 12-point font and should contain a header as well as a fitting title. Please complete your first draft of this essay by March 24 and submit it here: Peer Review – Personal Narrative. The final draft will be due TBA. Please feel free to e-mail or text me with questions.
